Why You Have Pain In The Left Side Of The Stomach

Abdominal pain is often caused by air in the intestines. However, if it hurts a lot, it may indicate a more serious condition.
Therefore, you have pain in the left side of the abdomen

Many have pain in the left side of the abdomen. This is relatively normal. Therefore, today we will explain what the cause of the pain may be.

Pain should always be taken seriously. It’s your body’s way of telling you something’s wrong. It’s not always a sign of something serious, but do not ignore it. If anything worries you, the best thing you can do is contact your doctor. She is the only one who can make the right diagnosis.

You have pain in the left side of the abdomen. What caused it?

If you experience having several of the following symptoms at the same time, it may be a good idea to see your doctor:

  • Constant pain. Pain usually comes and goes. If you have a stomach ache, the pain often subsides after a few hours or days. It is a danger signal if you constantly have pain in the left side of the abdomen and if the pain does not go away on its own.
  • Intense pain. How does the pain feel? If you have had flatulence before, you probably know how a little stomach discomfort feels. That is not necessarily a cause for concern. If, on the other hand, the pain is sharp and if you can not ignore it, it may be a sign of a more serious problem.
  • Painkillers only work for a short time. If you take painkillers to try to relieve the pain, it will sometimes go away and then come back in full force within a few hours or the next day. This means that the pain medication did not eliminate the problem.
  • So when should you respond? It is normal to have pain in the left side of the abdomen. Often it is just due to too much intestinal gas. However, the stomach also stores on other important organs. The pancreas, stomach, left kidney and liver are all in this area and therefore abdominal pain in the left side is something you should absolutely not ignore.

Here are some of the possible reasons why you have pain in the left side of your stomach:

Chronic inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)

Next to air in the intestines, this is the most common cause of pain in the left side. Chronic inflammation of the pancreas  often manifests itself in such an intense way that  one has to go directly to the hospital for hospitalization.

Usually one will feel a very intense  pain in the abdominal region accompanied by fever, vomiting and palpitations. Pay attention to small symptoms during the day that can help you figure out what you are doing wrong.

Think about how your digestion works. Do you feel heavy and have pain in your left side after eating? If the  pain is very sharp and accompanied by the previously mentioned symptoms, you should go to the doctor as soon as possible.

2. Acute intestinal obstruction

Acute bowel obstruction is as uncomfortable as it sounds.

It occurs in the small intestine or colon and is a blockage that does not allow food or fluid to pass through the intestine.

In addition to abdominal pain in the left side, you will have a fever and will not be able to get rid of either intestinal air or feces.

It’s more normal than you might think. 15% of all people admitted with abdominal pain have an acute intestinal obstruction.

3. Diverticulum disease

We have previously talked about this disease on the blog, but what is it really? Diverticulum disease occurs when an inflammatory condition occurs in the digestive tract, creating sores that fill with pus and are very painful.

If you have diverticulum disease, you will suffer from diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, inflammation and maybe even bleeding from the rectum. It is important to keep an eye on these symptoms so that you can detect and treat the disease as early as possible.

4. Kidney stones

Sometimes kidney stones occur without you noticing them or having any symptoms, especially if they are still being formed. But at some point, they will get big enough that it will hurt a lot.

This pain can occur in the left side of the body, but  keep in mind that the kidneys sit further back on the back. The pain can just as easily get to the same place on the right side.

5. Cysts on the ovaries

Women get cysts on the ovaries from time to time and they can occur in the left ovary. But how does it feel?

Cysts can cause a feeling of heaviness, even if you have not eaten much. They can also cause a sharp pain in the side, which is sometimes accompanied by  irregular menstruation, pelvic pain, nausea, vomiting and general discomfort in the abdominal region.

6. Other less serious causes of side pain: Food poisoning, flatulence and stress.

  • Abdominal pain does not have to be due to anything life-threatening. Many people get a stomach ache when they are stressed or have eaten a little too much. But even if it is not as serious as, for example, chronic inflammation of the pancreas, it does not mean that it is not important. Not at all.
  • Many people get a stomach ache after eating bad food. If you get a food poisoning, you will experience severe abdominal pain in the left side, often accompanied by vomiting.
  • Flatulence is also relatively normal. Although it may seem strange, it can sometimes accumulate in either side of the stomach.
  • Emotions can cause abdominal pain. Stress can be felt in the body. Sometimes the feeling can even sit in a certain side of the stomach. It can cause constipation and irritation in the abdominal region. So do not write off stress as a potential factor if you have a stomach ache.

If you have experienced the above symptoms and are concerned about your health, you should always consult your doctor. The doctor is the only person who can make a proper diagnosis. Follow your doctor’s advice and avoid self-medication or self-diagnosis.
