Four methods to seal your wood floor

It can take a long time to seal your hardwood floor properly. Today we review the different methods to treat your floor and make it shine without so many problems.

If you wait too long without sealing it properly, you may notice that it gradually loses its characteristic feature. This is because it will attract moisture and dirt.

The material also wears faster without a seal, which can cause the wood to change shape and color.

What is the best way to seal your wood floor? Wax is the traditional method and is still common today, but there are other interesting products that achieve the same end result.

In this post, we share four effective ways to do this so your wood floors can stay shiny and clean. Here they are.

You will need it to seal your hardwood floor

In the shop there are various products available to seal your wooden floor. The traditional wax is still used for plank floors. But if the wood is special, use other types.

Treatment of wooden floors

If your floor is made of untreated wood, linoleum or cork, you can use liquid wax or oil. It is not recommended to use this type of wax on vinyl floors that are coated with urethane or floors that are not sealed.

Another excellent alternative is water-based silicon. You can use this on almost any floor except cork, linoleum and wood that is not sealed.

Hard wax can be used to make linoleum, cork, concrete and untreated wood shine. It should not be used on vinyl or urethane treated surfaces.

You can also make your own homemade wax that you can use on your hardwood floors , but they do not always give the best results.

  • When it is clean and dry, moisten a soft cotton towel that has no lint.
  • Apply a little wax to the floor according to the product instructions.
  • Let it dry. Then polish with a clean towel or polisher.
  • When the floor gets a creamy look, it is because it is dry.

4. Homemade recipe with wax and turpentine

If you want to use a homemade product, here is a simple beeswax and turpentine recipe, two ingredients with an oily texture that leaves the wood clean and shiny.

It is a preparation that is free of toxic chemicals that you can use for your wooden floors, as well as furniture that is starting to look opaque and have bumps.

Ingredients

  • 50g grated beeswax
  • 62 ml of turpentine

Course of action

  • Pour the grated beeswax into a heat-resistant container and melt it in a water bath.
  • When it starts to float, stir with a wooden spatula and slowly add the turpentine.
  • Mix it until you have a homogeneous product and then turn off the heat.
  • Allow to cool to room temperature and store in a container with a screw cap.

Note: If the smell of turpentine bothers you, you can add a few drops of essential oil to make the smell better.

Here’s how you do it

  • Clean the surface of the wooden floor and apply the required amount of wax.
  • Spread it with a microfiber cloth until it shines.

Choose the most appropriate method to seal your wood floor and give it the care it needs to last for many years to come. The method does not change much from product to product. The only difference is the sealant you use.
